We’re so excited about this year’s camp, which will combine practical martial arts skills with the flashy, fun stuff that your kids will get an absolute kick out of! Campers will explore concepts like awareness, empathy, and using their voices to manage their own safety, as well as Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Rest assured that the skills learned in this camp come in handy for dealing with dangerous people like bullies or tricky adults.
On top of that, the kids will get special training from an industry professional to produce their own action scene — at the end of the week, we will film this scene for kids and parents to take home and remember the week they got to spend fighting like an action hero.
This camp is filled with activities for: physical fitness, self-defense, confidence building, signs of danger, how to keep a keen eye for things that look out of place, and fun with new friends. Plus, we’ll develop confidence and skills to avoid dangerous situations and people, and how to talk about them to safe adults.
This exciting camp will be taught by ATX Tactics co-lead instructor Vanessa Swesnik, whose background as a classroom teacher, police officer, and martial arts enthusiast provide the unique skill set required to teach self-defense to children. She loves working with children of all ages and is excited to bring developmentally appropriate games and activities to this lively group of 7 - 12 year olds. (Yes, she will find teachable moments and capitalize on them at every chance she gets!)
This year an additional instructor will also be Hector Gonzales, an entertainment industry professional with a wealth of experience as a stunt performer and choreographer. He also has a prolific background in martial arts, with close to 20 years experience. Hector is an advocate for continual learning and practicing of all styles of Martial Arts. He has a 2nd degree black belt in Jun Fan Gung Fu (Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do) and a 1st degree black belt in Filipino Martial Arts (a blend of Kali, Escrima, Arnis, Panatuken). His arts are from the Inosanto lineage and he practices and teaches them here at ATX Tactics by appointment as well as through a Stunt/Choreography workshop on Sundays as part of his work in the Austin Filmmaking Community, of which he has been a part since 2002.
